After more than 6 years of dedicated service to Douglas County, K-9 Blu has officially settled into a well-deserved retirement. Partnered with Deputy Blake Davis, Blu leaves behind a legacy of courage, determination, and unwavering dedication to keeping our community safe.
Blu's story began in California, where Deputy Davis first encountered him during the selection process.
"When Blu bit me for the first time, I distinctly remember thinking, I wonder how I am going to call my wife and explain that my wrist was broken from a dog bite one day into my K-9 career," Davis recalls with a laugh. Thankfully it was just a bruise, but that powerful first impression proved prophetic—Blu's strength and passion for apprehending dangerous criminals would define his entire career.
What made Blu special wasn't just his physical capabilities, but his instinctive understanding of police work. "Blu knew what his job was every time I got him out of the car," Davis explains. "I just had to learn how to get out of his way and let him work."
Today, Blu enjoys the simple pleasures of retirement—playing with his collection of toys, spending long days with his favorite person (Deputy Davis's wife, Susan), and lounging around the house. Thanks to the generous support of Friends of Douglas County K-9 donors, Blu's transition to retirement has been seamless, with all his veterinary care and needs fully covered.
"Your remarkable donations greatly eased the burden of providing Blu the retirement he most certainly has earned but more importantly deserves," Deputy Davis shares.
As we celebrate Blu’s retirement, we’re excited to introduce two new furry heroes joining the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit. K-9 Officer Grogu, partnered with Deputy Gage Walpole, brings unbridled energy and comprehensive training to complement the unit's tradition of excellence in law enforcement.
Additionally, the unit has expanded its community impact with K-9 Guster, working alongside Deputy Corbin as the newest School Resource Dog. This exciting addition extends the unit's positive influence directly into local schools, where Guster will build bridges between law enforcement and young community members.
Every donation to Friends of Douglas County K-9 directly impacts the lives of these remarkable animals and their handlers. From specialized equipment and training to veterinary care and retirement support, your contributions ensure our K-9 partners can serve effectively and retire with dignity. As we honor Blu's service and welcome Grogu and Guster, we're reminded that behind every successful police dog is a community that believes in their mission. Thank you for being part of our pack.
