Sam Callery's Eagle Scout Project Honors Douglas County K-9s

When Sam Callery from Boy Scout Troop 770 approached the Douglas County Sheriff's Office with his Eagle Scout project proposal in 2024, he brought along a vision to create a lasting legacy for every K-9 Officer who has served the Douglas County community.

From Dream to Reality

Sam’s goal was to create a monument honoring all the Douglas County Sheriff's Office K-9s, past and present. What began as one young man’s ambitious dream grew into an extraordinary journey of fundraising, planning, and community support—ultimately raising over $20,000, exceeding his original goal by more than $5,000! After covering all monument expenses, Sam proudly presented the DCSO with a check for more than $7,300 to support the K-9 Unit.

Sam's project wasn't just about creating a memorial—it was about ensuring that every K-9 who has served Douglas County would be remembered and honored. His vision included two significant components: a commemorative plaque featuring all current and past DCSO K-9 officers, and a life-size bronze statue of a K-9 officer.

A Timeline of Dedication

The project unfolded in phases, each milestone marking Sam's growing commitment to honoring these four-legged heroes. The commemorative plaque was completed first, unveiled in October of 2024 in a ceremony that brought together K-9 handlers, their families, and community members who supported Sam's mission.

But Sam's vision wasn't complete until February of 2025, when the bronze statue was finally unveiled. The life-size K-9 officer now stands as a permanent tribute to the courage, loyalty, and service of every K-9 who has worn the badge. Completing this project helped Sam secure his Eagle Scout award—something only 6% of all Boy Scouts who ever put on the uniform ever achieve.

Sam is quick to point out that this project was far from a solo effort. He offers his heartfelt thanks to Sheriff Darren Weekly, Sergeant Tim Van Noordt, and Cocha Heyden of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, as well as to his friends and family, whose support, encouragement, and hard work were essential to making this dream a reality.

The Power of Youth Leadership

As we celebrate Blu’s retirement, we’re excited to introduce two new furry heroes joining the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit. K-9 Officer Grogu, partnered with Deputy Gage Walpole, brings unbridled energy and comprehensive training to complement the unit's tradition of excellence in law enforcement.

Through his Eagle Scout service project, Sam learned valuable lessons about leadership, project management, and community engagement. More importantly, he created something that will honor K-9 veterans for generations to come.

A Legacy That Endures

Today, visitors to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office can see both the commemorative plaque and the bronze statue, permanent reminders of the K-9s who have served alongside human officers to keep our community safe. Every current and former K-9—from those still actively working to those enjoying well-deserved retirement like recently retired K-9 Blu—is represented in Sam's memorial.

His monument stands as proof that when young people are empowered to lead, extraordinary things happen—and entire communities benefit from their dedication and service.
