"To support the Douglas County K-9 Unit's efforts by raising funds to purchase dogs, equipment and supplies, and to inspire a movement to educate the public on the human value of these heroic animals."
Established in 2011, Friends of Douglas County K-9 is the only non-profit organization solely committed to the financial support of the Douglas County Sheriff's K-9 Unit. With the exception of deputy salaries and vehicles, the K-9 Unit is funded almost solely through donations.
Rather than simply raising funds for the dogs, the founders of Friends decided that a more sustainable solution would be to create a non-profit public charity to provide ongoing support for the Unit. This support includes the purchase of new dogs, ongoing training of new and existing dogs, equipment, supplies and retirement care for the animals, and raising public awareness of the value of the K-9 Unit.
